I have just googled "The Greatest Builder UK". Google in its infinite wisdom threw back 14 builders from Persimmon to Berkley Homes. I added "Historic" into the search string and it threw back several well known architects but no builders. I suppose it comes down to the definition of "Builder". Google seems to encompass everyone from those that change national policy to architects, surveyors and tradespeople in its reponses.

A change in tact .... I tried who has historically influenced construction the most in the UK. The results were interesting.....

The Romans. What did they ever do for us? well, concrete, engineering, sophisticated urban planning techniques, rectilinear buildings, drainage, roadways, the list goes on

The vikings - Angles, Saxons, Jutes stayed with the rectilinear with their great halls of wooden construction.

William the Conqueror - briging with him crafts people from the continent, new engineering, incredible architecture and material use.

Henry III responsible for the Cosmati pavement in Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle and the Tower of London.

Sir Christopher Wren - among many churches, St Pauls Cathedral. Although an Architect his aptitude for understanding a structure from the engineering perspective was quite something

During the industrial revolution there are many visionaries but one of course stands out; Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

For me... it has to be those that came here with William the Conqueror, most of them nameless but highly skilled bringing a wealth of knowledge, skills and techniques with them. They were multi cultural and multi religeous and both female and male could be found on site working alongside each other in peace with one aim in mind to build something beautiful that could stand the test of time.

Who is your greatest builder?
