Every damp investigation begins with a structured moisture profile using a capacitance meter, allowing me to map elevated readings across walls, floors and timber. These readings are then cross‑checked with thermal imaging, which highlights evaporative cooling, hidden moisture pathways, cold bridging and insulation defects. By comparing both sets of data, I can distinguish between genuine moisture ingress, surface condensation, and false positives caused by salts or construction materials.
To understand the environmental conditions driving damp, I record surface temperatures, internal and external humidity, dew point, and the absolute moisture content of the air. This atmospheric data is essential for identifying condensation, poor ventilation, and occupant‑related moisture loading. I also assess ventilation performance, air‑change behaviour and heating patterns to determine whether the room environment is contributing to the issue.
Where deeper confirmation is required—particularly in solid walls, screeds or older construction—I can undertake calcium carbide testing, which provides a definitive percentage moisture content unaffected by salts or surface conditions. This test is especially valuable when deciding whether a damp problem is structural, environmental or related to trapped moisture within the fabric.
